The University of Connecticut Locksmith Department started in 1945 or 1946 as a one-person department under the electrical shop. It was then moved to the attic of Warehouse II in the old Physical Plant Building.

In 1958 a second locksmith was hired. Eventually, one of them was made supervisor. In 1960 or 1961 the Locksmith Department moved to the basement of the old Fire Department on Glenbrook Road. It was an old building with Fire trucks parked over our heads. In 1964, another Locksmith was hired. In 1970, a third Locksmith was hired. In 1973 the Locksmith Shop went form being under the Physical Plant to the Division of Public Safety. The Division of Public Safety transferred a secretary to the Locksmith Department. In December 1994 we hired a part time key cutter. Now she is full time, and also does our Locknetics programming. We started working with cardkey access in 1998. We now work with Locknetics electronic locking systems. We moved to the Facilities Operations building in June of 1997. In August of 1997 the supervisor retired, a Locksmith moved into his position, and we lost one Locksmith position. We now have one Supervisor, one Office assistant, two Locksmiths, one storekeeper, one retiree Locksmith (for 120 days a year) and three student helpers.

We supply security systems to the University of Connecticut, serving the Storrs, Campus Depot, Extension Centers and campus branches.

Our staff of 5 full-time and 3 part-time personnel are available to assist you from Monday through Friday, from 7:00-3:00.
